Bird Bits, May 5th by John Zimmerman

By Bruce Gatling-Austin

What began over the last few weeks as a trickle of migrants, has now become a torrent. Orioles, tanagers, thrushes, flycatchers, and that unique western hemisphere group of birds, the wood warblers, are arriving daily, Some, like the wood thrush, eastern wood-pewee, and scarlet tanager will remain to nest at Ivy Creek. Other species, like the rose-breasted grosbeak, American redstart, and hooded warbler will move to higher elevations to nest along the Blue Ridge. Still others, like the Swainson’s thrush, magnolia warbler, and Blackburnian warbler, will continue to the northern hardwood and boreal forests.  So that you may catch a glimpse of this dynamic spring event the Monticello Bird Club is offering guided bird-watching events at Ivy Creek every day this week from Monday (May 5) through Friday (May 9) from 7 to 8 a.m. (and probably a little longer if the birding is good).
